Abstract

1,104,423. Shift registers. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. 8 March, 1965 [10 March, 1964], No. 10131/64. Heading G4C. [Also in Division H3] A shift register comprises a strip 1 of anisotropic magnetic thin film having a first stable state in one direction 15 and a second stable state in the opposite direction 17 representing an item of information, with a plurality of parallel shift control conductors 3, 4 extending across the strip receiving sine-wave currents such that the field applied by one control conductor 4 has a phase lag relative to the field applied by an adjacent earlier conductor 3. In the illustrated embodiment, the shift control conductors 3, 4 are formed by a pair of interlaced conductors 3, 4 traversing the strip 1 backwards and forwards around pegs and spaced from the strip 1, the conductors receiving waveforms 90 degrees out of phase. An information bit 16 written by a head 9 has its leading edge advanced progressively by advance shiftcontrol conductors and its lagging edge erased by the opposite rearward shift-control conductors. To ensure complete erasure of the information a biasing field may be applied to the strip. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 857,289.
