Abstract

A polyurethane is prepared by (I) condensing an hydroxyalkylated phenol with a ketone and (II) reacting the resulting product with an organic polyisocyanate. The hydroxyalkylated phenol may be made by reacting a phenol of formula <FORM:1103955/C3/1> where R1 can be H, F, Cl, Br or a monovalent organic group with an alkylene oxide, glycidyl compound or epihalohydrin (optionally with minor quantities of diepoxides in addition) in the presence of a polyether forming catalyst. The ketone may have formula <FORM:1103955/C3/2> where R2 and R3 are:-methyl, ethyl, benzyl, cyclohexyl, allyl or chloromethyl. Step II may be conducted in the presence of a foaming agent and a phosphorus containing compound, e.g. a phosphoric acid or ester. Conventional polyurethane forming catalysts may also be present in step (II). In an Example 2-phenoxyethanol is condensed with acetone, to give a product which may be reacted with tolylene diisocyanate with or without a foaming agent, e.g. trichlorofluoromethane.
