Abstract
1,103,769. Friction clutches and brakes. K. & L. STEEL FOUNDERS & ENGINEERS Ltd. 10 Feb., 1966 [26 Jan., 1965], No. 3450/65. Headings F2C and F2E. A clutch or brake plate comprises a support part A connected to a driving or driven, rotatable (by vehicle wheels) or fixed member and having radially outwardly - extending arms defining peripherally opening recesses therebetween, and segments B having friction linings D bonded, riveted or bolted to both sides thereof, the linings D overlapping said arms of the part A to prevent axial movement of the segments with respect to the part A, and the segments being radially retained by a latch ring (E) which is axially urged by a coil or washer spring (F) to snap-over tangs C pressed out from the segments. Tangs C, C<SP>1</SP> project from both sides of the segments to provide for fitting the segments either way round. The spring (F) reacts on a washer located by a circlip on a member H to which the part A is welded, bolted or riveted. The segments B are originally punched out from the original disc forming the part A. In changing the linings, the clutchshrouding members and presser plate are respectively removed and slackened off, and a screwdriver is used to prise off the latch ring (E) from the tangs C to allow removal of the segments B. New segments are tapped fully home until the latch ring (E) snaps over the tangs C.
