Passage of sprocket-holes in a tape 11 results in the successive activation of photo-cells A, B, and the successive marking through AND gates 20-23 of leads A<SP>1</SP>B<SP>1</SP>, AB<SP>1</SP>, AB, A<SP>1</SP>B. With flip-flop 28 initially set by a signal from 38, AND gates 24-27 respond to these markings to operate flip-flops 28-31 as a shift register. When any flip-flop turns on feed-back over a delay circuit 32-35 turns off the preceding flip-flop. Tape flutter causing temporary reversal has no effect provided the amplitude is low. Completion of a cycle produces an output fed to a counter at 36.
