Abstract
1,102,992. Ion-exchange. PERMUTIT CO. Ltd. 25, Jan., 1967 [26, Jan., 1966], No. 3545/ 66. Heading B1J. In a cyclic process wherein liquid is passed through a vessel containing a bed of a mixture of cation- and anion-exchange resins of different specific gravities, the bed is periodically regenerated by moving it as a slurry out of the vessel and introducing it into a stream of water flowing upwards at a velocity sufficient to carry one resin upwards but insufficient to prevent the other resin from moving downwards, removing the resins as separate streams, one upstream and the other downstream of the point of entry of the slurry into the upwardly flowing stream, regenerating the resins individually, returning them to the vessel and mixing them. As shown, ion-exchange treatment of water entering at 2 takes place in bed 4. When regeneration is necessary the resin from the bottom of the bed is fed as a slurry via pipe 19 to vessel 11 where there is an upward flow of water 14 which carries the lighter anionexchange resin via pipe 11 to regeneration vessel 21 while the heavier cation exchange resin falls in the stream and passes to regeneration vessel 24.
