Abstract
3,4-Diethyl pyridine is prepared by reacting an alkali metal with liquid ammonia containing an alkylation catalyst to produce an alkali metal amide, adding 3-ethyl-4-methyl pyridine to the resulting slurry and then adding a methyl halide to the resultant mixture. The product is suitably isolated by evaporating the ammonia, adding water dropwise, extracting the resultant solution with a water-immiscible organic solvent washing and drying the organic extract and removing the organic solvent. Ferric nitrate is the preferred alkylation catalyst and ether is a suitable organic solvent.
