Abstract

1,102,721. Recording and playback. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 May, 1965 [22 May, 1964], No. 21198/65. Heading G5R. [Also in Division B8] To determine the position of a magnetic spot on a magnetizable carrier, a head arranged with its sensing direction perpendicular to the carrier surface detects the flux component at rightangles to the surface. When an indicator connected to the head shows that the flux sensed by the head is passing through zero, the position of the spot is determined. The system is of use in determining at which times to unload goods from a conveyer. A drum with a magnetic surface having a permanent magnetic polarization rotates in conjunction with the movement of the conveyer and has a number of tracks corresponding to the number of possible unloading stations. When an item is loaded on to the conveyer a write head on the appropriate track is energized to provide a magnetic spot on the drum. When the spot subsequently passes a corresponding read-head, the zero passage of the perpendicular component of the magnetic flux is sensed and the signal used to operate the corresponding unloading mechanism of the conveyer. Read-head.-The head for sensing the static perpendicular flux component may consist of a sense winding 20 with its axis in the perpendicular direction inside which is a core 21 of square loop material carrying windings 22, 23 to which a 50 kc/s. switching signal is applied. No voltage is induced in the winding 20 in the absence of an external field, due to the arrangement of the windings 22, 23, but when an external static flux links the core, an output signal of amplitude determined by this flux and of twice the switching frequency will be obtained from the winding 20. This signal is passed via a filter and a phase-sensitive rectifier to an amplifier discriminator arrangement which produces a pulse when the flux signal passes through zero. Alternatively a read-head comprising a Hall element can be used for the static reading of the perpendicular field.
