Abstract

1,102,445. Toothed gearing. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION. 8 April, 1965 [11 April, 1964], No. 15059/64. Heading F2Q. [Also in Division H2] A power transmission drive comprises a planar air gap discoidal armature motor which drives at the outer periphery of its armature disc the rotary input member of a " strain type " epicyclic gear. A flexible tube shaped member 18 is connected to the output shaft 17 which is supported in covers 10 of the device by bearings 19. The tube has at its end remote from the shaft external spline teeth 20 which co-operate with teeth 16 on the inner periphery of end cover 12. Within the open end of tube 18 is the rotary input member 32 which has an elliptical periphery 34 and is rotated by pins 42 which protrude from the outer periphery of motor armature 40. Balls 36 transmit the radial movement to an outer member 38, which is supported inside tube 18, and deflects this member to mesh teeth 20, lying on the major axis of the elliptical input member, with teeth 16; the number of teeth on tube 18 and cover 12 being different. The motor discoidal rotor 40 is of multi-ply form with a thin metallic disc 44 having driving pins secured in projections on its outer periphery. Disc 44 is overlaid by an insulating stiffening layer (47) which has secured to it lamina (46) which carries the armature conductor pattern, Fig. 6 (not shown). The rotor is rotatably mounted on stub shaft 54 and co-operates with annular permanent magnet 50 having a number of poles spaced apart by slots 52 and secured to shaft 54. A ring 68 of magnetic material is secured to an insulating block 72 which is carried on end cover 12 and provides a return path for the magnetic flux. Insulating sleeves 76 extend axially through bores in block 72 to house the brush assemblies for supplying current to the motor. In a modification the magnetic field may be produced electromagnetically and the connections to the electromagnets are taken through a tubular stub shaft. The armature conductive pattern may be produced by known techniques, e.g. printed, plated or etched.
