Abstract
1,102,395. Cathode-ray tubes. TEKTRONIX Inc. 17 March, 1966 [26 March, 1965], No. 11800/66. Heading H1D. In a direct-viewing bi-stable storage tube such as described in Specification 992,176 in which a combined storage and display target comprises an integral, porous layer of phosphor material through which secondary electrons generated by low velocity flood electrons are transmitted to a transparent, conductive backplate, the phosphor layer is also photo-sensitive and may comprise photo-emissive material such as magnesium oxide or photo-conductive material such as cadmium sulphide uniformly mixed with the phosphor material. The phosphor storage layer may be sensitive to an ultraviolet or to an X-ray image and may be used to store a light image of a graticule scale etched or printed on the inner surface of the tube face-plate beneath the transparent back-plate of the target. The face-plate may be first etched to form notches and the notches then filled with titanium dioxide. The graticule is illuminated by transmitting a flash of light through the outer edge of the face-plate. A separate light source is provided for ordinary illumination of the graticule. To store light images of low intensity the low velocity flood electrons are prevented from striking the target. The storage tube may be used to convert an X-ray image into a visible light image while simultaneously providing an electrical read-out signal. A low intensity light source may be employed to form a pointer spot on the storage layer which is not stored but does provide an electrical read-out signal. The storage target may be divided effectively in two, one area being operated in a storage mode and the other in a non-storage mode, e.g. for comparison or reference purposes. The same electron gun may be used for writing and reading operations and the tube comprises two flood guns. A light image may be projected on to the rear surface of the storage target through a window in the ceramic, funnel portion of the tube envelope. A light image may be projected by use of a point source of light or by use of laser beam or light may be reflected directly off a document. Switch positions of amplifiers and sweep generators may also be stored and reproduced.
