Abstract

1,101,717. Making electrically heated windows; corrugating wire. BARR & STROUD Ltd. 13 July, 1965 [1 May, 1964], No. 18278/64. Heading B3E. [Also in Division H5] Apparatus for use in the manufacture of electrically heated windows having a series of side-by-side lengths of fine, crimped electricallyconducting wire extending therethrough comprises a frame 1 to receive wire lengths across the space thereof, a carriage 4 bridging the frame space longitudinally of the frame 1 and mounted at its ends for reciprocation transversely of the frame, and a crimping head 10 on the carriage 4 including a pair of co-operating rotary toothed wheels 16 adapted to crimp wire from a source on the head and lay lengths 20 of crimped wire across the frame space on reciprocation of the carriage 4, the head 10 being longitudinally movable on the carriage 4 following each operating stroke so that the crimped wire lengths 20 are spaced side-by-side on the frame. A manually rotatable shaft 12 rotates the wheels 16 and moves the carriage 4 across the frame 1 by a rack 15. After each traverse across the frame 1 the crimped wire is cut and secured to side bars 2, 3 of the frame and the head 10 is moved along the carriage 4 prior to the start of the next traverse. The crimps of adjacent wire lengths on the frame are out of phase with one another. The crimped wire lengths are sandwiched between glass sheets which are then secured together. In another embodiment, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), the wire is crimped and laid on both strokes of the carriage, the head being automatically adjusted longitudinally at the end of each stroke and the crimped wire being laid in a zig-zag path around pins in the frame bars.
