Abstract
1,101,519. Rotational moulding; heated moulds. DOHM PLASTICS MACHINERY Ltd. 23 May, 1966 [19 Aug., 1965], No. 35636/65. Heading B5A. In a process for the rotational moulding of thermoplastics, heating fluid is circulated through a hollow jacket (8, Fig. 2, not shown) defining the cavity walls, while rotating the mould on a plurality of non-parallel axes (e.g. AA, BB), and cooling fluid is circulated through the jacket when moulding is complete. Preferably, hot gas is admitted to the interior of the mould to obtain a smooth inner surface to the moulding, at least during the latter part of the circulation of the heated fluid. The apparatus (Fig. 2, not shown) comprises a mould unit, (2), defining a mould (6), including a hollow jacket (8) defining those parts of the mould corresponding to the walls of the article to be moulded, means to rotate the mould unit e.g. motor (32, Fig. 1, not shown) about a plurality of non-parallel axes (e.g. AA, BB), a heat exchanger unit (56, Fig. 1, not shown) and connections completing a fluid circulation system through the heat exchanger unit and the hollow jacket. There may be means to supply heated gas to the mould e.g. fan (66) and heater (68). The mould unit may be mounted on a rotatable shaft and rotated about an axis perpendicular to the shaft. There may be a plurality of mould units mounted on the shaft.
