Abstract
Peracetic acid is prepared by reacting an excess of acetaldehyde and oxygen in the vapour phase to produce a reaction mixture containing peracetic acid, acetic acid and unreacted acetaldehyde, passing the mixture so produced to a distillation column to which a solvent for the peracetic acid is fed whereby a solution of peracetic acid and acetic acid in the solvent is formed and removed from the base of the column and a gaseous stream containing acetaldehyde and solvent passes from the top of the column to a partial condenser which serves to return part of the acetaldehyde and solvent as reflux to the distillation column, and recovering acetaldehyde from the uncondensed gaseous stream leaving said partial condenser while the gases are compressed for at least part of the recovery process. Said compression may be effected by feeding the gases leaving the partial condenser into a liquid seal rotary compressor to which the solvent to be used in the peracetic acid extraction is fed so as to form the liquid seal, the gas stream from the compressor being condensed and the solution of acetaldehyde in the solvent so produced being passed to the distillation column to provide at least part of the solvent feed to the column. A portion of the acetaldehyde-solvent reflux stream may be fed to the liquid seal rotary compressor to make up the liquid seal requirements. Acetaldehyde vapour leaving the condenser after the compressor may be scrubbed with water and distilled prior to re-use as required. Specification 1,099,263 is referred to.
