Abstract

In a process of vacuum depositing metals such as Al, Zn, Cu, Cr, Mo, Zr, Ti, Ni, Mg, Cd on to a plastic substrate, the substrate is first coated with a polymer of propylene which has been chemically modified by reaction with an a , b ethylenically unsaturated organic compound selected from the class consisting of carboxylic acids, their anhydride, their amides and their alkyl esters having up to 12 carbon atoms in the alcohol moiety. The plastic substrate may be such as poly [3,3-bis (chloromethyl) oxetane], polyethylene, crystalline polypropylene, amorphous polypropylene, polystyrene, P.V.C. polymethylmethacrylate cellulose acetate butyrate, polyformaldehyde, condensation product of p,p'-isopropylidene diphenol and phosgene, or a terpolymer of styrene, acrylonitrile and butadiene. The ethylenically unsaturated acid derivative may be maleic acid, fumaric acid, citraconic acid, itaconic acid or acrylic acid. Maleic anhydride is preferred. Metal films up to 0.0005 inches thick can be formed by repeating the coating process. The metal coating can be further treated with lacquers or paint.
