Abstract
An insulating varnish is made from the reaction product of (a) of a polyester containing free carboxyl groups and derived from terephthalic acid, at least one polyhydric alcohol, and tris(2 - hydroxyethyl)isocyanurate and/or tris(2-carboxyethyl)isocyanurate with (b) a condensate containing free hydroxyl and amino groups of trimellitic acid tris (ethylene glycol) ester and an aromatic diamine. The preferred polyol in (a) is ethylene glycol. Suitable diamines in (b) are those of formula p,p1-H2N.C6H4.X.C6H4.NH2 wherein X is -(-CH2-)-n, -O-, -S-, or -SO2-, n being 1-4. It is preferred that the molar ratio of terephthalate to isocyanurate residues be about 2:1 and that the weight ratio of (a) : (b) be about 1:1. In examples polyesters are obtained by condensing, i.p.o. Li naphthenate, dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol and tris(2-hydroxyethyl)iso-cyanurate or tris(2-carboxyethyl)isocyanurate and are then reacted with a product derived from trimellitic acid tris(ethylene glycol) ester and methylene dianiline. The products are dissolved in a cresol/solvent naphtha mixture with a polybutyltitanate catalyst, and used to coat wires. A comparative example uses a terephthalate/ethylene glycol/glycerol polyester reacted with a trimellitic anhydride/methylene dianiline condensate.ALSO:An insulating varnish for metal wires comprises the reaction product of (a) a free carboxyl-containing polyester from terephthalic acid, a polyhydric alcohol and tris (2-hydroxy-ethyl) isocyanurate or tris (2-carboxyethyl) isocyanurate and (b) a condensate of trimellitic acid tris (ethylene glycol) ester and an aromatic diamine, containing free hydroxyl and amino groups. In Examples the polyester is derived from dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol and tris (2-carboxy- or 2-hydroxy-ethyl) isocyanurate, reacted with a trimellitic acid tris (ethylene glycol) ester/methylene dianiline condensate, and dissolved in cresol/solvent naphtha with a titanium catalyst. Copper wires are dip-coated with 5 layers of this varnish, then optionally with two layers of a cresol solution of a terephthalate/p-hydroxybenzoic acid/ethylene glycol polyester, then stoved at 420 DEG C.
