Abstract

Styrene is obtained by vapour phase dehydration of a -phenylethanol at 180-280 DEG C., preferably 200-250 DEG C., over an oxide catalyst, preferably titania. Similarly a -methyl styrene and isobutene are obtained from cumyl alcohol and t-butyl alcohol, respectively.ALSO:Oximes and hydroxylamines are obtained from the corresponding primary amines, the amine group of which is attached to a primary or secondary saturated carbon atom, by treating the amine in the liquid phase with a combination of a dissolved metal catalyst selected from Ti, V, Cr, Se, Zr, Nb, Me, Te, Ta, W, Re and U catalysts and an organic hydroperoxide as the essential oxidizing agent. The preferred reaction temperature is in the range of about -10 to +175 DEG C. Specified organic hydroperoxides are those of the formula ROOH wherein R is an aralkyl, aralkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyaralkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, hydroxycycloalkyl or alkyl. Analogous hydroxy hydroperoxides may also be used. Specified amines are those which contain 1 to 20 carbon atoms such as benzylamine, isopropylamine, cyclohexylamine, and cyclododecylamine. The reaction is carried out under a pressure sufficient to maintain the liquid reaction phase. The process may be carried out continuously or batchwise. Alternatively, the process may be carried out starting with the hydrocarbon from which the hydroperoxide is derived and oxidizing the hydrocarbon, e.g. with molecular oxygen, in the first step; the by-product alcohol which is formed during the reactions may be recovered or converted into other compounds or back to the initial hydrocarbon from which the hydroperoxide was obtained. Cyclohexyl hydroxylamine may be prepared and air oxidized to the oxime. Examples are given for the production of cyclohexyl hydroxylamine, cyclohexanone oxime, and n-hexylaldoxime. Acetophenone is obtained by dehydrogenation of a -phenylethanol at 200-300 DEG C. in the presence of a Cu catalyst.
