Abstract

[Also in Division D1] Apparatus for continuous or intermittent application of adhesive to web or sheet material comprises an adhesive storage container 1, a delivery member 11, an intermediate chamber 14 with an applicator roller 17, a controllable slide 16 the edge 19 of which together with sealing elements 29 (Fig. 2, not shown) forms a sealable opening with the surface of applicator roller 17 to the intermediate chamber, a stripper 18 which with the surface of roller 17 limits the chamber 14, and a second delivery member 25 for returning excess adhesive to the storage chamber 1. The container 1 is heated and contains a level regulator 10 and the delivery pipe 12 is fitted with a spring loaded valve 27 which acts as an adhesive by-pass and produces a mixing action in the molten adhesive chamber 5. The chamber 14 has a diaphragm 15 which controls the pump 11 in dependence on the pressure in the chamber 14. The slide 16 is actuated through a lever 21 either to give continuous coating or by intermittent movement to produce intermittent coating and the lever 21 has a stop 24 which controls the thickness of coating applied. The apparatus can be used to coat a horizontally moving surface either from below or above and also to coat a vertically moving surface and several applicator heads can be supplied from a single adhesive storage container (Figs. 3a-d, not shown). The roller 17 can also be fitted with one or more radially retractable interrupting means for producing narrow interruptions in the coating applied. Such means (Fig. 4, not shown) consists of a spring loaded cam operated interrupter 34 which is withdrawn into the interior of roller 17 as it approaches the surface to be coated and returned to its outer position where its surface of roller 17 after it has passed the point of application of adhesive. An additional projecting gear wheel 25a (Fig. 11, not shown) may be provided to contact and withdraw any threads of adhesive which may form between the roller 17 and the coated surface and feed them back into the applicator head. In another embodiment (Fig. 12, not shown) the return gear pump 25 is replaced by a single draw-in roller 43 which returns the excess adhesive to the chamber 14. With this arrangement a sealing slide 44 is provided to close the gap when the machine is inoperative. Further the roller 17 can be formed with a shaped periphery to provide a narrow strip of adhesive with a bead of adhesive at each side thereof (Figs. 14-16, not shown).
