Abstract

1,100,622. Electrostatic playback apparatus. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. 19 April, 1966 [23 April, 1965], No. 17208/65. Heading G5R. [Also in Divisions H1 and H3] Information stored as an electric charge pattern is read non-destructively by varying in an oscillatory manner the electrical induction associated with the charges. An ultra-violet spectrograph may be stored as a charge pattern on a photo-electric mosaic 4, Fig. 1, on an insulating base 5 provided with a back plate 6, or a charge pattern may be produced on a storage device in a mass spectrograph. In one read-out device, Fig. 1, the storage device is mounted on a suitably contoured surface 2 which is traversed by a carrier 10 carrying a knife-edged reed 13 disposed above the device and vibrated towards and away from its surface at a frequency of 10 kc/s. The output current taken from the back plate 6 or from the reed 13 can be measured by a tuned amplifier and synchronous detector. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the charge storage device (31) is arranged on a piezo-electric element (32) energized to vibrate the storage surface towards and away from an array of parallel conductors (33) connected to a switching array (34) which provides for each conductor in turn to be switched into an output circuit. In a further arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the storage device is arranged in a cathode ray tube and scanned by a modulated monochromatic electron beam. A grid (25) in front of the storage device allows the beam to pass through it and be reflected by the stored charges, thereby inducing a current in the back plate (27) of the storage device. The current is non-linearly proportional to the charge, but the response may be linearized by applying a feed-back voltage to the back plate (27).
