Phenol-aldehyde condensation products.-In the manufacture of hard insoluble infusible products from a phenol and formaldehyde, the phenol and formaldehyde are heated with a small quantity of basic catalyst until all the solvent water and about half of the water formed by the condensation reaction is driven off, after which a neutral liquid other than water is added to prevent too great a rise in temperature and the final stages of the process are effected slowly at a moderate temperature without employing pressure. According to examples :-Pure phenol or cresol, formaldehyde solution, and a small quantity of caustic potash are heated and stirred until all the water originally present and about half the water formed is distilled off, ethyl or methyl alcohol is then added, the heating continued until half the alcohol is distilled off, the mass is then run into open moulds and dried slowly in a current of air at a temperature rising from 60‹ C. to 115-120‹ C.; instead of alcohol, a mixture of oil of turpentine and glycerine, with or without vaseline, and colouring-matters, is used.
