Abstract

110,035. Fiddyment, J. C. Oct. 16, 1916. Extrusion presses.-In presses for extracting fluids from vegetable matter &c. and of the kind comprising a shell 10 and an inner rotating body 16 having a compression space 28 which decreases in area from the inlet to the discharge end, the body 16 is provided with a series of circumferential channels communicating by lateral passages 43 with adjacent channels, and with stops 44 in the channels adjacent the passages 43 to force the material from one channel to the next. Rolls 53 on a shaft 52 turned by gearing 20, 55 engage in the channels 28 to prevent rotation of the material, and are provided with recesses 54 to allow the stops 44 to pass them. Washers 56 shaped as shown in Fig. 7 fill the spaces between the rolls 53. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the bottom of each channel is formed by two loose rings 29, Fig. 5, mounted on a boss 26 so as to remain stationary with the material whila the body 16 is rotating. Spaces 27 between the rings 29 and the flanges 25 of the body 16 receive a part of the expressed liquid. Passages 37, Fig. 1, extend through the body 16 and communicate with the spaces 27 and receive the liquid therefrom, and rotary conveyers 38 in these passages discharge the liquid from the body 16. The rings 29 are adjusted bv screws 36 to regulate the width of the entrances to the spaces 27. The conveyers 38 are rotated by pinions 40 on their shafts running on a fixed circular rack 41. The shell 10 is composed of sections 11 secured together by bolts 13 and spaced apart by washers to provide circumferential passages 12 for the escape of liquid. The pressed material is discharged through an adjustable passage 61 by a spiral thread 59 on the body 16. In the form shown in Fig. 11, the rings 29 are omitted from the channels 28 and the stops 44 are integral with the flanges 25, which are successively placed closer together. The rolls 81, Figs. 11 and 12, that engage in the channels 28 to prevent rotation of the material therein are formed as star wheels and are rotated intermittently in the manner of Geneva stops. Spaced rings 88 admit the expressed liquid into the body 16. According to a further modification, the body 16 is provided with a spiral thread in the narrow part of the shell 10.
