Abstract
Polymethyl methacrylate or cellulose acetate contains, as a plasticizing and fire-proofing composition, a composition comprising a preponderance, i.e. at least 70% by wt., of a mixture of a mono-(halogen-substituted alkyl) phosphoric acid and a di-(halogen-substituted alkyl) phosphoric acid prepared by heating POCl3 with a tri-(halogen-substituted alkyl) phosphoric acid ester to produce a reaction mixture, adding water to the reaction mixture in a substantially stoichiometric proportion and removing the HCl formed (see Division C2). A specified composition contains the mono- and di-basic acids (ClC2H4O)2PO(OH) and ClC2H4OPO (OH)2.ALSO:A composition comprising a preponderance, i.e. at least 70% by weight, of a mixture of a mon-(halogen-substituted alkyl) phosphoric acid and a di-(halogen-substituted alkyl) phosphoric acid is obtained by heating phosphorus oxychloride with a tri-(halogen-substituted alkyl) phosphoric acid ester to produce a reaction mixture, adding water to the reaction mixture in a substatially stoichiometric proportion to hydrolyse acid chloride groups present and removing the HCl so formed. The first stage of the reaction is generally effected at 90-100 DEG C. and the reaction mixture at the end of the first stage contains at least 70% by weight of the mono- and di-acid chlorides. The hydrolysis is effected at a temperature not exceeding 70 DEG C. and the hydrogen chloride is then suitably removed by blowing nitrogen through the mixture at 90-100 DEG C. The ratio of the mono- and di-acids in the final composition is suitably 2:1 to 1:2 by weight. An example of the phosphate starting material is tri-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate. The stoichiometric amount of water required is 3 mols. per mol. of POCl3 used and the product may be treated with H2O2 to lessen the discoloration.
