Abstract

1,099,960. Rollers. MOUNT HOPE MACHINERY Ltd. March 30, 1966 [July 19, 1965), No. 13982/66. Addition to 979,018. Heading F2U. In a roll for a paper-making machine, a hard rubber or fibre glass sleeve 24 is rotatably mounted by spools 14, 18, and bearings 161-164 upon a stationary hollow axle 12 which is initially bowed to a preselected curvature by a tension rod 34 welded to an abutment 42 in the axle, nuts 40 on each end to an abutment 42 in the axle, nuts 40 on each end of the rod allowing individual tensioning of each half of the rod, and hence individual setting of the curvature of each half of the axle on either side of the abutment 42, so that the resultant force of the axle weight and load elastically deflects the roll to a longitudinally straight configuration. Water-tight end-caps 26 on the roll protect the bearings 161-164. The axle ends are supported in plain cylindrical bearings or, as shown, spherical elements 28. In Figs. 2-5 (not shown), the sleeve (24) is supported by four spools (14), (18), and five bearings (161-165), and the hollow axle is formed with two spaced intermediate abutments (48), (50), pairs of tension rods (56), (58), symmetrically spaced about the vertical plane of curvature, extending between the end walls (37) and the respective nearer abutment. These pairs of rods may also then be used to correct residual curvature in a plane at right-angles to the principal plane of curvature due to manufacturing tolerances. A fifth tension rod (52) extends from one end wall (37) freely through the first abutment to the second abutment to compress that section of the axle between the two abutments. Each pair of tension rods (56), (58) may be replaced by a single hollow tube, Fig. 6 (not shown), telescopically receiving the longer tension rod. Since the central axle portion requires most bending movement, it may be permanently deformed with an upward bend, or the hollow tube may be subjected to compression, Fig. 7 (not shown), to reduce the bending moment applied to the respective endmost section of the axle by the interior rod. In Fig. 8 (not shown), two tension rods only are used, extending the whole length of the axle from the upper circumferential part of one end wall, passing freely through a respective first abutment and welded to the lowermost circumferential part of the second abutment, and then extending to the uppermost part of the second end wall.
