Abstract

1,099,688. Bellows; mechanical seals; expansion joints. CRANE PACKING Ltd. Jan. 12, 1966 [Jan. 26, 1965; May 21, 1965], Nos. 49365/64 and 21711/65. Addition to 986,217. Headings F2B and F2G. A bellows is made in situ as described in the parent Specification and provided with at least one layer formed by strips 1 which are directly or indirectly secured together at their ends. As shown, strips 1, made of nickel-copper alloy are carried by wires 2 which fit into grooves 6 when wound into position. This layer is then followed by three turns of P.V.C. reinforced with knitted fabric, a layer 8 of metal strips, a layer 9 of P.V.C. and a final layer 10 of metal strips, the whole being secured in grooves 12 by clamps 11 which are built up of arcuate sections. In Figs. 2, 3 and 4 (not shown), the strips are made of nylon or an acetal resin and formed with interlocking ends; the strips may also be made of fabric-reinforced rubber or metal mesh. In Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the bellows is concave instead of convex and secured by clamps (21) made of arcuate sections secured together by tangential-bolts (23). The strips can be secured over convex faces instead of in grooves. In another embodiment, the bellows is made wholly of layers of metal strips which overlap one another; if desired, the strips may be sealed with an epoxy resin or coated with P.V.C. or polyethylene before being fused together by heat.
