Abstract

1,099,310. Selecting records. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. Sept. 27, 1966 [Nov. 5, 1965], No. 42993/66. Heading G4M. In a card random access memory of the type disclosed in Specification 889,788, the gating rods 20, which normally engage notches in the sides of the strips suspended in the magazine, are provided with a damping device to reduce the force of impact on the notches when the gating rods are returned from the disengaged to the engaged position. The gating rods 20 are rotated to the disengaged position by solenoids 51, rack 47 and pinion 46. When solenoids 51 are de-energized, springs 48 return racks 47 and rods 20 towards the engaging position, the initial movement being rapid, but since racks 47 are coupled to dashpots 56, the speed of movement is greatly diminished by the time the rods 20 engage the retaining notches in the strips. The dashpots 56 comprise a cylinder 57 having a small aperture 58 and a piston 59 coupled to racks 47 by a rod 61 and a bracket 62. A partial vacuum is formed in cylinder 57 as piston 59 is moved downwards on return of the rods 20 to the engaging position.
