Abstract

1,099,139. Flying presses. HALLDEN MACHINE CO. May 9, 1966, No. 20502/66. Heading B3W. A flying press comprises a set of spaced pivots and arms swingable thereon; a set of spaced eccentrics and arms swingable on the eccentrics as pivots; opposite companion platens, for mounting a die set, the platens having pivot connections with the arms of the sets, respectively and forming therewith parallelogram systems swingable about the pivots of the respective sets with the platens parallel to each other, guide means on one platen slidably receiving the other platen for guiding the platens for aligned operational movement and for transmitting swinging motion of one system to the other system; drive means for the eccentrics and means to impart swinging motion to said one system. Two pairs of parallel shafts 32, 34 are rotatably mounted in a frame 12. Each shaft carries two eccentrics and all eight eccentrics are similar. The shafts are geared together to rotate at the same speed and are relatively positioned so that they are in the positions shown in Fig. 2, i.e. the maximum throw of the upper eccentrics being closest to the lower pair of shafts and vice versa. An upper platen 14 is pivotally attached to the follower arms 36 of the eccentrics and a lower platen 16 is similarly connected to the lower eccentrics 34. The platens are guided for relative sliding movement by guide posts 48, fixed in the lower platen and slidable in the upper platen. Flying motion is imparted to the lower platen by links 50 which are pivoted to one pair of arms 38 at 62 and at their other ends encircle eccentrics 52, which are mounted on a shaft (54) Fig. 1 (not shown). An extension 56 of the shaft is supported in a bracket 60 at the side of the frame and carries a gear 64. A rack 66 meshes with the gear and is connected at 68 to a variable-throw crank pin in a disc 74 which is mounted on and rotates with one of the shafts 34. The platens 14 and 16 carry punches and dies respectively for blanking out a plurality of discs, from metal strip S, at each stroke of the press. The strip S is advanced by feed-rolls 120, 122 which are driven at the same speed as the input shaft of an infinitely variable ratio gear-box. The output shaft of the gear box drives the shafts 32 and 34 through reduction gearing. There is thus a fixed relationship between the speed of the press and the speed of the strip, the gear-box ratio being set so that the appropriate length of stock is fed through the dies during each press cycle. During each revolution of the shafts 34 two of the arms 38 pivot about the points 62 to impart a flying motion to the lower platen, and hence, by the posts 48 to the upper platen. The pivot point 62 is stationary if the crank-pin 68 is co-axial with the shaft 34 and in order to adjust the flying speed of the platens to the feed speed of the strip the crankpin is moved radially outwards, so that the rack 66 oscillates the cam 52. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown) the upper arms 36 merely pivoted on fixed shafts. The specification states that the press may also be used as a flying shear.
