Abstract
1098462 Treating filamentary tow EASTMAN KODAK CO 11 Dec 1964 [11 Dec 1963] 50471/64 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] In a method of applying solid particles to a tow of continuous filaments, a dispersion of the solid particles in an aqueous binder is applied to the tow, which is then compressed to squeeze out excess dispersion and force the particles into contact with each other and/or the filaments, and the compressed tow is then dried. The filaments may be of cellulose acetate, regenerated cellulose or polyethylene, and the dispersion may comprise carbon particles in aqueous adhesive compositions of dextrin, methyl or ethyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, poly saccharide gum, starch, urea or melamine/ formaldehyde condensates, polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl acetate. The dispersion may be applied by contacting the laterally-spread tow with a roller partially immersed in a constant level liquid bath, or by passing the tow under such a roller. Excess dispersion may be removed by providing nip rolls associated with the partiallyimmersed roller, Figs. 5 and 6. In Fig. 5 the surfaces of rollers 20 and 22 may be stainless steel or one or both of the rollers may be provided with a sleeve of, e.g. rubber or polytetrafluorethylene. The tow may be crimped as initially supplied, but additional crimp may be obtained if at least one of the rollers 20, 22 is rubber-covered, especially if the liquid bath contains a softening agent for the tow. The tow may be dried by passing it on a conveyer belt in tensionless state between heat sources disposed above and beneath the tow, or by passing it over and under a series of heated drums, or by passing it over endless belts in a multiple-pass conveyer oven. The tow may be used to form tobacco smoke filters. In one embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) a bloomed tow from bale 12 passes via banding jets 14, 18 to the nip of rollers 20, 22 where dispersion is picked up from roller 22 partially immersed in bath 30, excess liquid being removed by pressure roller 20. Trough 28 is maintained at constant level. The compressed and bonded tow is dried by heat sources 44, 46, removed from conveyer 42, by rolls 48, 50 and is passed to stuffer jet 56 and to paper wrapper and rod former 58.
