Abstract
1,098,429. Aircraft instruments. DORNIERWERKE G.m.b.H. Nov. 11, 1965, No. 47873/65. Heading B7W. In an instrument for facilitating the landing of aircraft, the image of cross-wires is projected in a head-up display so that if the image is kept aligned with a fixed point on the ground, the guide angle of the aircraft is held constant. The vertical position of a disc 7, carrying the crosswires 3, is set manually, and varied automatically by gyroscope 19, so that the angle of the line of sight to the horizontal is held constant. The gyroscope also rotates the disc relative to the aircraft as the aircraft rolls. The ground may be viewed directly, or through a periscope 27, which may be fitted with a zoom lens, and the head-up display includes displays of angle of incidence and altitude or airspeed. The crosswires may also be moved laterally by a heading gyro or in accordance with drift angle. The periscope may include an infra-red to visible light converter. The instrument may additionally be used as a bomb-sight.
