Abstract

1,098,122. Inspecting glass articles photoelectrically. STEINKOHLENBERG WERKE MATHIAS STINNES A. G. Feb. 24, 1965 [Feb. 24, 1964], No.7949/65. Heading G1A. The distribution of glass in a glass article is determined by investigating the pattern of electromagnetic radiation emitted or absorbed by the article by locating the article near a concave mirror at the focus of which is a radiation detector. The absorption pattern is measured by a heat source 14, Fig. 3, and a concave mirror 3 and detector 4 such as a Pb-Se cell mounted on a slidable support 11. The glass article 2 is rotated and mirror 3 rocks to provide a scan, and any flaws such as voids which are detected are indicated or used to reject the defective article. When the source is retracted from the article, the attenuator 15 corresponding to a minimum acceptable thickness of glass is between the source and mirror and calibration takes place automatically. Emission measurements on still-hot articles may be made by locating concave mirrors on either side of a conveyer. The associated detectors feed separate amplifiers and meters or a common amplifier and meter alternately. Ultraviolet radiation or X-rays may be used instead of heat.
