Fire-bars and grates; mechanical stoking.-An underfeed stoker having at least two fuel troughs or retorts, one adjacent each side wall of the furnace, is provided with grate bars perpendicular thereto inclined downwardly to a dumping grate located between them. The space below the main grate is divided by a partition 15 into two chambers 16, 17, which are in communication with one another through passages 32 in the fire-bars 5. The stoker is carried by vertical frames 7, 18 shaped to receive the fuel troughs 4, and the partitions 15 which form the ash-pans beneath the grates. The fire-bars 5 are alternately fixed and reciprocating, and are supported at one end on bars 26 bolted to the frames, and at the other on inverted channelshaped air boxes 24 in open communication with the chambers 16. The air for combustiton is supplied to each section of the grate from a flue 39 under control of a damper 39<a> and passes through U-shaped conduits 32 in the hollow fire-bars, and ports 34 to the ash-pan chamber 17. A portion of the air flowing through the fire-bars is delivered through openings 35 along one edge of the fuel trough, and a further portion from the chamber 16 is supplied along the other edge through a box in the side wall and openings 36. Air may also be supplied under control of a damper 44 to the space beneath the dumping-grates 6. The reciprocating bars are actuated by rockers 27. The invention is shown applied also to a stoker having three fuel troughs, four sets of fire-bars, and two separate dumpers.
