Abstract

1,097,902. Reactors. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. May 12, 1965 [May 13, 1964], No. 20128/65. Heading G6C. A guide tube or insulating tube for a fuel element in a reactor is made of a brittle material or material of low mechanical strength, and the wall of the tube is reinforced. The tube may be of beryllium, beryllium oxide, ceramic material, graphite, pyrographite, silica, or a sintered material. The reinforcing may be metal or glass fibre. The reinforcing may be attached to the tube by means of a collar around each end of the tube, or by means of a washer on each end face of the tube. The reinforcing comprises wires or small diameter tubes placed on the outer surface of the tube, inset into the outer surface, or entirely embedded within the tube wall. The wire may be arranged in parallel, axially extending lengths, in helices of the same or opposite hands, or in a combination of helices and straight lengths. Instead of individual reinforcing members, an integral metal wire or strip netting can be used, in which case it is possible to embed this in the material of the tube so that it extends throughout the tube wall thickness; a single thin walled metal tube may also be used. In order to obtain special properties, such as a low friction inner surface to the guide tube, composite tubes can be built from several layers.
