Abstract

1,097,169. Percussive drills. ATLAS COPCO AKTIEBOLAG. Sept. 20, 1966 [Sept. 29, 1965], No. 41976/66. Heading B4C. [Also in Division F1] A percussive drill having an impact motor 15 adapted to strike a drill steel 21, comprises a noise damping means including a shield having a soundabsorbing sack 28 and a bellows portion 34 including a collar 39 for contact with the ground. The sack, which is of a woven nylon fabric lined by a machine felt and an inner layer of loosely woven nylon fabric, is connected at its open end to an annulus 25 by a clamp 36. The clamp also secures one end of the bellows which is made from moulded rubber or from interconnected rings 35 of rubber, plastics material or leather. The collar 39 is made from a resilient material, such as expanded rubber, in order to provide sealing contact with the ground. The bellows may be kept in a retracted position by means of cables (45, Fig. 1) and, once the hole is started, allowed to decend so that the collar contacts the ground. A suction pipe 43 is connected to the bellows in order to remove flushing air and drill cuttings. In modifications, the bellows may be formed with a double wall into which air may be forced in order to extend the bellows or consist of a number telescoping tube portions.
