Abstract

1,096,595. Lasers. NIPPON ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 31, 1965 [July 20, 1964], No. 13628/65. Heading H1C. The output of a laser is controlled by preventing the generation of more than one transverse mode of each order. In a gas laser a mode control plate 15 is provided at a distance a from the laser axis 13 and between the laser tube and one of the cavity mirrors. By preventing formation of an upper beam 18, the formation of the lower beam 18, of the same order and symmetrically disposed with respect to axis 13, is also prevented. A virtual mode control plate 15<SP>1</SP> is thus effectively provided, leaving a slit 16 of width 2a. The distance a is selected so that passage of only one of the transverse modes of each order is possible. Beams 17 are of the same order as beams 18 which are blocked. It is stated that spatially independent modes of the same order e.g. TEM 02 , TEM 11 and TEM 20 tend to oscillate at slightly different frequencies so that wide band communication using the laser beam becomes difficult, whereas elimination of, say, modes TEM 11 and TEM 20 removes the adjacent frequencies without substantially attenuating the output. Instead of a plate 15 non-reflective portions may be formed on one of the cavity mirrors, or opaque portions may be formed on the Brewster windows of a gas laser. Spherical mirrors having the same or different radii of curvature may be used for the resonator, or one may be a plane mirror.
