[Also in Division B4] A stapling device suitable for surgical use comprises two arms 23, 24 able to be moved together in the hand and a cartridge 27 for one or several staples, the cartridge being releasably clipped to a holder 31 which extends between the arms so that, when the arms 23, 24 are pressed together, the end 39 of one arm ejects the staple 26 from the cartridge and closes the staple against an anvil 28 of the other arm. Springs 32, 33 between the arms, and a part 37 to prevent excessive opening of the arms, are also provided. In a similar embodiment, Figures 6- 13 (not shown) the cartridge (61) which holds sixteen staples is circular and is releasably held for rotation between a central holder and one of the arms. The action of pressing the arms together to eject and fold a staple causes a cam (92) to move a lever (83) and a ratchet mechanism to rotate the cartridge to supply the next staple, the ratchet mechanism comprising teeth (68) on the periphery of the cartridge and a spring loaded pawl (82).
