Abstract

109,543. Porter, W. Nov. 30, 1916. Lathes; screwing; chucks.-An automatic lathe for rounding, pointing, tapering, or screwing the ends of bars, &c. is provided with cam-operated reciprocating-means to feed the blanks from a hopper into a chuck, cam-operated reciprocating means to close and open the chuck, and camoperated means acting through lever mechanism to actuate the cutting-tool or automatic screwing device. The feed comprises a blank pusher D secured in a shaft d which is reciprocated in brackets d<3>, g, adjusted by a screw-and-nut device d<1> and clamped by a set-screw d<2> to lever mechanism actuated by cams on a revolving-drum I. The front end of the bar D slides in a guide G which is slotted at g<2> to receive the blanks which fall from a hopper F containing a rotary agitator. The hollow mandrel B through which the finished work is pushed by the rod D carries a chuck C, the jaws c of which are actuated by an operator E which carries spring-controlled dogs e<3> to prevent undue velocity of the blanks. The movement of E to the right forces the jaws c together, and to the left allows them to open. The movement is effected by a collar j<7>, which is reciprocated by a lever moved by cams on a drum J, and which engages the curved ends of a bell-crank b<2> pivoted on a collar b<1> on the mandrel b and bearing on a collar e on the operator E. The operator E is pressed to the left by a spring. The part b may be provided with a handle. The slide L, Figs. 1 and 5, is reciprocated by a lever l<1>, is pivoted on a lever l<3>, is actuated by a cam K, and moves on a table l<4> which is secured to the saddle by a pin l<5> embraced by jaws l<6>, Fig. 7, to permit vertical adjustment. The cut is varied by a screw l<8>. The shaft H carrying the cams is independently driven through toothed gearing by a pulley loosely mounted thereon. The guide and pusher may be arranged at the rear and a cam and lever operated automatic screwing-chuck arranged in front of the workcarrying chuck. In some cases, the machine may be constructed so that the pusher mechanism can be arranged in front of or behind the mandrel. The Provisional Specification states that the blanks may be fed from the hopper into the guide by mechanical means, and that a mechanically actuated stop may be arranged in front of the chuck to determine the distance the blank protrudes.
