Abstract
Copolymers are chlorinated by a process which comprises contacting an aqueous slurry, having a maximum solids content of 25 weight per cent, of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer containing 5 to 30 weight per cent of vinyl acetate residues and having a molecular weight of 1,000 to 40,000, with chlorine in the absence of oxygen at not above 70 DEG C. until the copolymer contains a maximum of 40 weight per cent of chlorine. In examples ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers are chlorinated in aqueous slurries, and the products stabilized with phenyl phosphite and a barium/sodium stabilizer.
