Abstract
1,094,350. Screw-and-nut gearing. SCULLYJONES CO. Nov. 11, 1966, No. 50629/66. Heading F2Q. In a ball screw mechanism comprising a screw 48 and nut 40, a longitudinal slot 54 is provided in the nut 40 and individual ball return inserts 64a, 62a, 62b, 62c, 62d and 64b are disposed in the slot 54 to define crossover passages connecting opposite ends of corresponding helical passages to define closed circuits for trains of balls. The inserts are formed with ball guiding grooves 72, 74<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, on their side surfaces and are sufficiently loosely disposed in the slot 54 to permit slight axial movement therein. Pins 82, 84 locate the end inserts 64a, 64b. Alternatively, the slot may be formed in the screw.
