1,093,209. Analyzing by gamma-ray resonance. SOJUZNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATEISKY INSTITUT PRIBOROSTROENIA. April 15, 1966, No. 16521/66. Heading G1A. A method of determining an element, isotope or compound thereof in a specimen by the resonance absorption and scattering of gamma rays comprises the steps of: (1) measuring N#, the number of gamma quanta transmitted or scattered with the source and specimen oscillated relatively to one another so as to destroy the resonance condition for most of the oscillation period. (2) measuring No, the number with the source and specimen relatively at rest. (3) measuring Nb, the number with the source and specimen at rest and a filter removing substantially all the resonance component of the radiation from the source. For determining SnO 2 in a rock sample, the source comprizes Sn<SP>119m</SP>O 2 powder and the scattered or transmitted radiation is measured by a NaI(Tl) scintillator coupled to a photo-multiplier. The filter is made by compressing Sn<SP>119</SP>O 2 with an organic compound. A calibration curve is produced by measurements on reference specimens made by compressing different amounts of chemically pure SnO 2 with an organic compound without disturbing the lattice structure of the SnO 2 .
