A method of determining an element, isotope or compound thereof in a specimen by the resonance absorption and scattering of gamma rays comprises the steps of: (1) measuring N#, the number of gamma quanta transmitted or scattered with the source and specimen oscillated relatively to one another so as to destroy the resonance condition for most of the oscillation period.
