Abstract
A nylon composition having a relative viscosity greater than 70 is produced by adding at least 0.01% o a phosphorus compound of formula <FORM:1093203/C3/1> <FORM:1093203/C3/2> metal or <FORM:1093203/C3/3> to a nylon having a relative viscosity of up to 25, melting the mixture and sweeping the melt with 0.1-2.0 cu. ft. of inert gas per pound of polymer. R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or arylalkyl, X and Y are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or arylalkyl and n is the valency of the metal. The nylon may be nylon 66 and phosphorus compounds specified include phenyl phosphinic acid, diphenyl phosphinic acid and triphenyl phosphite. Up to 3% of phosphorus compound may be added to the nylon monomer before polymerization, together with other additives, e.g. cupric acetate, KI and/or an aryl sulphonamide, e.g. a mixture of N-ethyl-o- and p-toluene sulphonamide and o- and p-toluene sulphonamide. The molten polymer of reduced viscosity at least 4 may be heated to 260-300 DEG C. in a horizontal screw conveyer swept with the inert gas which may be N2 and may be preheated. The product may be used to make tyre cord.
