Abstract

A leaf processing machine, of the kind in which leaf is conveyed through a casing by a screw while it is acted upon by leaf engaging members between which and the leaf there is relative motion, comprises a first leaf-engaging means mounted on the outlet end of the screw, a co-operating leaf-engaging means mounted on the casing adjacent to the outlet end of the screw and at least one cavity formed in the casing, adjacent to said co-operating means, through which a liquid coolant such as water may be passed. The casing is in two parts, each mounted on support members, which parts may be separated to expose the screw and engaging means, and provide for ease of cleaning. An adjustable outlet valve may be provided at the outlet end of the casing. The first leaf engaging means may comprise helical cutter strips mounted on an enlarged head of the screw, and these may co-operate with similar strips mounted on the casing. The diameter of the core of the screw may increase, and the pitch of the screw may decrease, in the conveying direction of the screw.
