Abstract

1,092,446. Determining the proportion of a liquid in an immiscible mixture. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. March 2, 1966, No. 9190/66. Heading B1X. The percentage by weight of one liquid in a mixture of that liquid and another liquid, e.g. water in a water and oil mixture, is determined by passing the mixture firstly through a density meter 11, then into a selector 13 where a membrane 14 blocks the passage of the one liquid, the remaining stream of liquid flowing through line 21 to a second density meter 12. A comparator device 18 determines the difference between the readings of meters 11 and 12, or from this and knowing the density of the blocked liquid, e.g. water, the required percentage can be calculated. The density meters may be buoyant plummets housed in a vessel to which they are connected by chains, see Figs. 1 and 2 not shown, or alternatively may comprise a radioactive source and a sensitive radiation detector on opposite sides of the flow of liquid. A differential pressure controller 15 maintains a positive pressure difference across the selector, which may contain a fabric or paper membrane coated with a water repellant material.
