Abstract
1,092,418. Sink-float separation. K. F. TROMP. March 12, 1965, No. 10665/65. Heading B2H. The separation of solids, (e.g. raw coal or ore), having specific gravities by means of a body of suspension of uniform density in a tank 1 is carried out by creating a horizontal flow near the top of the body of suspension by supplying a first quantity of suspension through a nozzle 9 at the front end of the tank, withdrawing this flow together with the floats at the rear end of the tank, creating a downward flow along the front wall of the tank by supplying a second quantity of suspension through a nozzle 10 and withdrawing this flow together with the sinks from the bottom of the tank. The floats are flushed on to a screen 14 and the sinks lifted through a pipe 7 on to a screen 16, the suspensions being drained to a common tank 15 for delivery by a pump 27 back to a tank 20. The tanks 17 and 20 serve as measuring tanks; by keeping the water levels in these tanks the same distance above orifice plates 19, 22 by use of weirs 18, 21, the volume of suspension passsing through the tank from each nozzle to its respective discharge point remains the same and the zone above the lower edge 11a of guide plate 11 is kept free of upward or downward currents. The volume of suspension passing through pipe 7 should be such as to lift the largest piece of sinks and prevent the density in the tank from increasing with depth; if the densities differ at the discharges; adjustment may be made by operating valve 12. The discharge of pipe 7 is controlled by a regulator 25 which may be operated manually or by, for example, an electronic device or float as shown.
