Abstract

1,092,409. Aerials. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. Nov. 16, 1965 [Nov. 17, 1964], No. 48722/65. Heading H4A. A vertically polarized aerial array comprises at least one pair 5, 6 of log-periodic aerials, each aerial having its radiating elements 7 contained substantially in a vertical plane. The aerials are disposed in V-formation, with their shortest element adjacent, the angle between them being such that the distance between corresponding elements of both aerials is 0.4# to 0.8#, where # = the resonance wavelength of those elements. The aerials are suspended from ropes 4 between the tops of a common short mast 3 and separate high masts 3. The radiating elements 7 are dipoles, each half of which is in the form of a narrow triangle. A common feeder 15 supplies both aerials through a broadband 3dB directional coupler 11 and a reversing switch 10. The coupler is of the four-port quarter- or three-quarter wavelength type, the input port being connected to the feeder 15, the output ports to the aerials 5, 6 via the reversing switch 10, and the fourth port to a load resistor 12 for absorbing any reflected energy. The lengths of the leads 16, 17 between the coupler and the switch are made equal as are the length of the leads 23, 24 between the switch and the aerials. There is a phase difference of 90 degrees between the two outputs from the coupler and, in consequence, the main lobe of the radiation pattern of the array is swivelled in azimuth from the plane of symmetry of the array (Fig. 5, not shown). The swivelling can be made to be to the other side of the said plane by operation of the reversing switch 10, and it is stated that the effective aperture of the aerial is thereby increased. In a modification, five pairs of arrays are arranged in a five-pointed star (Fig. 6, not shown), so that their radiation patterns, including swivelling, cover all azimuths. A selector switch (22) is provided whereby up to five transmitters may be operated simultaneously.
