Abstract

Esters of the formula: R1-O-CO-R2 where the radicals R1, and R2 are the same or different, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radicals of 4 - 18 C atoms, and at least one of them carries a side chain of 1 - 4 C atoms, are used as foam-killers in systems containing anionic, cationic or non-ionic surfactants. In preferred compounds, having 6 - 12 C atoms, the side chain, in either or both the acid and alcohol moieties, is in the 2-position. Particular compounds include various esters of 2-ethylhexoic acid, 2,2-dimethyl isopantanic acid, and 2-methyl nonanic acid.
