To give a colour picture 30 on a white backing 31 the effect of a back-illuminated transparency, the picture is mounted parallel to the transparent front wall 33 of an edge-illuminated tank containing transparent liquid 32 such as silicone oil. The rear wall 34 is larger than the picture to provide a highly reflective border 40. The edges of the picture are obscured by a mask 44.
