Abstract

A photochromic material consists of a substitution derivative of 3,3-dimethyl-indoline-2spiro - 31 - naphtho - (Z,1-b) pyrane, the substituents being halogens (specifically chlorine), or -OCH3, -OH, -NO2, -CN, -CF3, alkyl, or aryl radicals. After U.V. irradiation, these substances show absorption bands near 5900 <\>rA, with response times of 1-10 seconds. The substances may be used in solution, e.g. in hexane, benzene or toluene between two sheets of glass, or may be evaporated from solution with a polymer, to form a film or lacquer.ALSO:Substitution derivatives of 3,3-dimethyl-indoline-2-spiro-31-naphtho-(2,1-b)-pyrane, the substituents being halogens (specifically chlorine), or -OCH3, -OH, -NO2, -CN, -CF3, alkyl or aryl radicals, are prepared in the known manner by action of the appropriate substitution derivative of 3,3-dimethyl-2-methylene-indoline on substituted 1-formyl-2-hydroxy-naphthalene in a tetrahydrofuran medium, in the presence of a small quantity of piperidine.
