Abstract

Liquid coating compositions for rendering paper, and like sheet material, masonry, concrete and brick water-repellent comprise a wax and at least one compound of the formula <FORM:1091525/C4-C5/1> where x is 2 and y is 2 or x is 3 and y is 1 and wherein R represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl radical and R1 represents the residue of a carboxylic anhydride R1(CO)2O and a solvent for the wax and the titanium compound. Preferred compositions comprise paraffin wax. Specified solvents are white spirit, trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene.ALSO:The invention comprises titanium compounds of the formula <FORM:1091525/C2/1> wherein x is 2 and y is 2, or x is 3 and y is 1 and R represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group and R1 represents the residue of a dicarboxylic anhydride having the formula R1(CO)2O, provided that when x is 3 and y is 1, the dicarboxylic anhydride is not phthalic anhydride, and mixtures thereof. The compounds are made by reacting a titanate of the formula Ti(OR)4 with an anhydride R1(CO)2O provided that when the anhydride is phthalic anhydride, the ratio of anhydride and titanate is such that x is 2 and y is 2. Mixtures of the novel compounds can be made by adjusting the proportions of the reactants and/or using a mixture of titanates and/or anhydrides. Preferred values of R are C1- 8 alkyl groups, particularly butyl groups. Specified anhydrides are succinic, citraconic, cyclohexane dicarboxylic, tetrachlorophthalic, camphoric, maleic and phthalic anhydrides. The compounds are used in water-proofing compositions (see Division D1). Examples are provided.ALSO:Textile materials, paper and non-fibrous porous materials are rendered water-repellent by treatment with a composition comprising a wax, a titanium compound of the formula: <FORM:1091525/D1-D2/1> where x is 2 and y is 2, or x is 3 and y is 1, R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group and R\sv represents the residue of a dicarboxylic anhydride R\sv(CO)2O, and a solvent for the wax and the titanium compound. Preferred compositions comprise paraffin wax. Specified solvents are white spirit, trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene. The treatment is effected by dipping, preferably followed by oven drying at 50 DEG C. Improved results are obtained by drying the material prior to treatment at 50 DEG C. Examples describe the treatment of cotton and wool fabrics.ALSO:Paper, masonry, brick and concrete are rendered water repellent by coating with a liquid composition comprise a wax, a titanium compound: <FORM:1091525/B1-B2/1> where x is 2 or y is 2 or x is 3 and v is 1, R represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group and R1 represents the residue of a dicarboxylic anhydride R1(CO)2O, and a solvent for the wax and the titanium compound. Preferred compositions comprise paraffin wax. Specified solvents are white spirit, trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene.
