Abstract
Copper values are recovered from an aqueous solution by a process comprising (a) contacting the aqueous solution with a substantially water-immiscible organic phase and an alkyl-substituted or alkoxy-substituted 2-hydroxy benzophenoxime to extract at least a portion of the copper values into the organic phase, the 2-hydroxy benzophenoxime having a solubility of at least 2% by weight in the organic phase; (b) separating the resulting copper-pregnant organic phase from the aqueous phase; and (c) recovering the copper values from the organic phase. The organic phase is preferably an hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon, e.g. petroleum-derived liquid hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene or xylene. In addition to the substituted benzophenoximes referred to above there may also be present on a -hydroxy oxime of formula <FORM:1091354/C1/1> in which R, R1 and R11 are hydrocarbon radicals and R11 may also be hydrogen. The process is applicable to the recovery of copper from solutions also containing iron.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1091354/C2/1> in which R and R1 are the same or different and each is an aliphatic hydrocarbon or alkoxy group containing 1-25 carbon atoms, m and n are 0-5 with the proviso that both are not 0 and that the total number of carbon atoms in Rm and R1n is from 3 to 25. They may be prepared (a) by condensing the appropriate benzophenone with hydroxylamine; (b) by reacting a substituted phenol with a benzotrichloride in the presence of aluminium trichloride; (c) by re-arranging a phenolic ester to a benzophenone in the presence of aluminium trichloride, or (d) by treating an appropriately substituted phenol with carbon oxide in the presence of caustic soda to give the corresponding salicylic acid derivative, treating this with phosgene and condensing the product with a substituted benzene in the presence of aluminium chloride. Examples are given of the preparation of 4-dodecyloxy-2-hydroxybenzophenoxime; 2 - hydroxy - 41 - (1,1 - dimethyl-ethyl) - 5 - (2 - pentyl) - benzophenoxime; 2 - hydroxy - 21,4,51 - trimethyl - 2 - octyl-benzophenoxime; and 2-hydroxy-5-dodecyl-benzophenoxime.
