Abstract
Copolymers which may be in the form of blocks, of alpha-olefines of the general formula CH2 = CH-R where R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, or alkaryl, with arylalkenes of the general formula <FORM:1090750/C3/1> wherein n=0-12, m=1-12, and Ar is an aromatic nucleus, which may be condensed, substituted, or unsubstituted are made by effecting the polymerization of the monomers either mixed or sequentially, in the presence of the reaction product of TiCl4 or TiCl3 with Al(C2H5)3, Al(C2H5)2Cl, and/or Al2(C2H5)3Cl3 in an inert solvent or dispersing agent preferably at a temperature of 30-150 DEG C., under slightly elevated pressure for 0.5-15 hours. Specified olefines are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, 3-methylbutene-1, pentene-1, 4-phenyl-butene-1, hexene-1, and styrene. Arylalkenes mentioned are 4-phenylpentene-1, 4-phenylhexene-1, 4-phenylheptene-1, 5-phenylhexene-1, 5-phenylheptene-1, 4-p-tolyl-pentene-1, and 12-phenyl-tridecene-1. The catalyst can be preformed or formed in situ, and the copolymerization effected in bulk or in a hydrocarbon solvent or diluent. In the examples, the catalyst is prepared in two stages, i.e. by first reducing TiCl4 with one of the organoaluminium compounds set forth above, and "ageing" this product for 5 hours at 110 DEG C., and then activating the product with further amounts of organoaluminium compounds. The polymerization is terminated by conventional techniques, and the copolymer recovered and purified by known methods. Examples are given of both simultaneous and sequential copolymerization.
