Abstract

1,090,575. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 7, 1966 [March 16, 1965], No. 11065/65. Heading B5K. Apparatus for sealing together at least two films 6 of thermoplastic synthetic resin comprises two pairs of jaws 2 capable of clamping the films 6 together in a plane, the jaws of one of the pairs being fitted with sponge-like material, and a metal element 5 with means for electrically heating it to a temperature causing emission of radiant heat and mounted to be moved between the two pairs of jaws 2 towards and away from the central point between the jaws 2. The jaws 2 are formed on two channel-section clamps 1. The limbs of the upper clamp 1 are provided with pads 3 of sponge rubber or flexible foamed plastic material. The element 5 runs along the length of the channel of the lower clamp 1, as shown, or the upper clamp. The element 5 is held taut by springs which will compensate for any expansion thereof as its temperature increases and may comprise a thin high resistance wire heated by passage of current therethrough. In use, the clamps 1 are brought together to close the jaws 2 on to the films 6. The element 5, heated to a temperature sufficient for it to melt the films 6 by radiation, is raised to an upper position, Fig. 2 (not shown), and maintained in this position until the films fuse together and form molten beads 7. The element 5 returns to its initial position, the clamps 1 open and the beads 7 solidify. The current may pass through the element 5 only when the clamps 1 are closed and/or in the process of closing, or the element 5 may be continuously heated. In the latter case, the lower position of the element 5 must be a sufficient distance from the upper position so that the heat being continually emitted does not affect the films 6 whilst the element is in the lower position. In modifications, the element 15 has a triangular cross-section. Figs. 4-6 (all not shown), and the clamp 1 which does not contain the element may contain an anvil 17, Figs. 7-9 (all not shown), biased by a spring 18 towards the central position between the clamps 1. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), for producing L-shaped seals, the apparatus comprises two channel-section limbs joined together to form an L. The two elements 5 are preferably connected in parallel in the same electrical circuit and the resistivity of the circuit to the point of contact 10 of the elements should be balanced. Compensating resistances 9 are connected to each element 5. Springs 11 mounted in insulated terminal blocks hold the elements 5 taut.
