Abstract

1,089,904. Photo-electric photo-meters. PYE Ltd. July 24, 1965 [July 24, 1963], No. 29289/63. Heading G1A. In a null balance photo-meter, the sample and attenuator beams are derived from different light sources, and the intensity of auxiliary beams from the two sources are compared to control the relative intensities of the sources. Two beams 1, 14 of radiation from a spectrally variable source 12 pass, one through a sample and the other directly to a detector 19. Similar beams 2, 15 from an auxiliary source 13 comprising a filament lamp and an interference filter pass, one through an attenuator 25 and the other directly to the detector. Beam choppers 17 and 18 operate cyclically to direct to the detector the following beams: first quarter cycle, beam 14; second quarter cycle, beam 15; third and fourth quarter cycles; both beams 1 and 2. A synchronous rectifier 22 operating at twice the chopping frequency produces a signal indicative of the difference in intensity of sources 12 and 13 which is used to alter the current in lamp 13 or adjust an attenuator to equalize the intensity of radiation falling on the sample and attenuator 25. A second synchronous rectifier, 21 operating at the chopping frequency derives a signal indicative of the difference of intensity of the beams 1 and 2 after passing through the sample and attenuator respectively and this difference is nulled by readjustment of the comb attenuator 25, the position of which indicates sample transmissivity. In a modification the four beams 1, 2, 14 and 15 may be simulated by appropriate movement of the source and attenuator into and out of two beams.
