An electrically operated hand tool for setting blind rivets comprises an electric motor 13 driving a spur reduction gear 16 and a worm and wheel 18 and 21. Mounted on the shaft of the wheel 21 is a pinion 11 which meshes with a mutilated gear-wheel 5. A rod 8 connects an eccentric pin on the wheel 5 with a chuck of known type which grips the rivet mandrel. Rotation of the wheel 5 pulls the chuck to set the rivet and break-off the mandrel, on the forward movement of the chuck, the jaws open and the rivet shank is ejected. Secured to the shaft of the wheel 5 is a slotted disc 7 which is engaged by a pin 20 on a member 12 connected to a trigger 13. A tension spring 19 tends to rotate the wheel 5. The motor is started by a switch 25 and when the trigger 13 is operated the wheel 5 rotates due to the spring 19 until it meshes with the pinion 11 and is then driven until the gap in the teeth is again opposite the pinion and rotation is stopped by the pin 20. In an alternative mode of operation the switch 25 remains in the " off" position, the rivet mandrel is inserted in the chuck and the trigger 13 is actuated to release the gear-wheel 5. The small rotary movement of the wheel, due to the spring 19 causes the chuck jaws to grip the mandrel so that the rivet assembly will not fall out of the tool while it is being inserted in the work. Further pressure on the trigger 13 then operates the switch 15 to start the motor and set the rivet. In a modification, the gearwheel 5 may be replaced by a mutilated wormwheel driven by a worm.
